Shelly Brown called West High’s Softball field home during her 4 years of high school. An outfielder as an underclassman, Brown became a pitcher during her senior year, where she pitched 2 no-hitters, one against Cedar Falls. She lettered in softball all 4-years of school. Shelly graduated from West High in 1985. She then attended the University of Northern Iowa where she graduated in 1990 with a Bachelors Degree in Education. In 2000 she received her Masters Degree. Her 18 year teaching career began in 1990 and continued until 2008. Shelly’s passion for teaching and students, kept her in the classroom even after being diagnosed with cancer in 2002. A beloved first grade teacher, Shelly shaped the minds of hundreds of young children. Shelly passed away February 19, 2008 of Breast Cancer.
Shelly is a member of the Waterloo Softball Association Hall of Fame, and was recently inducted into the Optimist Club Hall of Fame. The American Cancer Society Relay for Life team, Shelly’s All-stars, which she started in 2002, continues to raise thousands of dollars for cancer research each year.
Teaching and softball were Shelly’s biggest passions. She believed that every student deserved a good education and should be able to attend college. As a lasting memorial to Shelly, a mother, daughter, sister, teacher, and friend to many, her family has established an annual $1,000 scholarship to be awarded to a West High softball player.
