DES MOINES, Iowa – What a fantastic 2010-2011 season in Iowa high school sports and it is now time to look back and name our 2nd Annual Iowa Sports Connection “Senior” Iowa High School Female and Male Athlete of the Year.

When it came down to the young ladies the choice was a very difficult one with the likes of Alex Gochenhour (Logan-Magnolia), Taylor Greenfield (Ballard, Huxley), Shelby Houlihan (Sioux City East), Karen Hutson (Logan-Magnolia), Virginia Johnson (Iowa City High), Jadyn Spencer (Waterloo West) and Kiah Stokes (Linn-Mar, Marion). In the end the decision was to name two outstanding young ladies this season. Jadyn Spencer and Alex Gochenhour with their versatility in multiple sports and events ended up as our Iowa Sports Connection “Senior” Female Iowa High School Athletes of the Year.

Listed below are the bios on each of those that made the final list this season.

Alex Gochenhour (Logan-Magnolia) – Alex is a multi-sport talent and not only one of the top track and field athletes in the state but nationally. Alex also played basketball where this season prior to an injury set a new school record with 18 rebounds in a game.

Last season Gochenhour was part of the USA Track and Field Championships and was the heptathlon junior champion for those 19 and under and qualified for the IAAF World Junior Championships where she finished 10th in the world. Alex qualified at the Drake Relays this past season in the 100 and 400 meter hurdles and the long jump and 100 meter dash. Alex won the 100 hurdles and long jump titles. At the state meet Gochenhour won all four events she entered which included the 100 and 400 meter dash and 100 and 400 meter hurdles in Class 2A.

Gochenhour won 13 state titles in her high school career and will run track and field at one of the elite women's college programs in the country when she attends LSU next fall.

Shelby Houlihan (Sioux City East) – Shelby capped off a terrific senior season by claiming three individual titles in Class 4A at the state co-ed meet, winning the 400 meter dash, 800 meter run and 1500 meter run. In the process Houlihan set a new state meet record in the 800 and the 1500. Houlihan also won the 800, 1500 and 3000 meter run titles and was named the “Iowa High School Outstanding Female Athlete”.

Houlihan also had success outside the state in national meets against the best in the country. In the prestigious Jim Ryan High School Adidas Dream Mile held in New York, Houlihan finished 4th in the nation in a time of 4:43.64. In Eugene, Oregon while competing in the 19-under USA Track and Field Championships, Shelby broke the all-time mark in the 1500 meter run in Iowa high school history in 4:26.39, breaking the old mark set by Katie Flood of Dowling Catholic in 2010. Shelby now holds four Iowa high school all-time records when you include the two relay teams she was part.

Waterloo, Ia. — Jadyn Spencer pounded a state record 54 homers in her five-year softball slugging career. But don’t expect her to have a huge collection of her home runs balls on display.

Spencer, a Waterloo West graduate, has just two home run souvenirs at home. There’s her first one from 2007 when she homered in her first varsity game. The other is inscribed “Career Homerun #50.”

The rest of the softballs launched over the fence mostly ended up in the hands of little girls who admire the hitter’s talents. Spencer autographed many of them, then handed them away.

“You don’t really need those,” Spencer said. “What I have is memories from teammates. If that ball can be used to motivate a young girl, you’ve just got to take advantage of that opportunity.”

Spencer has been one to take advantage of opportunities in life — in becoming a three-sport star, an eager volunteer and a star student.

The Alabama recruit’s home run tally from ninth to 12th grade is 48, which is the fifth best in the nation.

She didn’t always have the swing of a slugger.

“On our traveling team, I would bunt every time,” Spencer said. “I couldn’t make contact.”

That changed when a local hitting instructor, Kevin McClain, taught her how to hit with power in junior high.

“He’s really the one who taught me to swing,” Spencer said. “I re-learned how to hit the ball.”

Her parents, Marvin and Joni, took her to the West batting facilities nearby their home for plenty of practice.

They also encouraged her studies: Spencer graduated with a 4.0 grade-point average and valedictorian honors.

“My parents instilled in me that academics are first — and you can play later,” said Spencer, who said she plans to study pharmacy in college.

Spencer is an active volunteer, serving at the local Food Bank.

She’s served in student government and helps out new students in the West High hallways.

“Being a role model is something not everyone has the opportunity to have,” Spencer said.

In sports, she earned all-state honors in basketball. She’s also the Iowa Gatorade player of the year in softball.

And to those accomplishments — a state shot put championship.

In the dugout, she’s always been helpful to teammates seeking advice, much like she supports autograph seekers by giving away home run balls.

“It wouldn’t be fair to anyone younger if I didn’t pass on that knowledge,” Spencer said.
